Detailed Description

From the Fromentine gully to the Gironde estuary, the Atlantic coastline stretches between sea and marshes. The Vendée coast, a straight coast interrupted only by the rocky projections of the Corniche Vendée, the Barges d'Olonne and the Pointe de l'Aiguillon. Two large fishing and marina ports punctuate it, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Les Sables-d'Olonne. Facing this coastline, the island of Yeu, anchored around ten miles offshore, with its wild coast and its small ports, is another world with surprisingly Breton accents. The three towers of La Rochelle, an essential stopover in this Charentais country, are a door open to the open sea, an invitation to a great journey. Ré, Aix and Oléron extend to the west the lands of Saintonge and Aunis. Everywhere, large beaches of blond sand, forts, old stones and fragrant gardens, strewn with passeroses, carnations and immortelles, make up the main charm of the Charentais pertuis.
